County to post new ‘pedestrian only’ signs at Blackford Bridge

Webster County Fiscal Court held their final meeting of the fiscal year on Monday.
Among items the court discussed was the purchase of two large signs that will be posted on either end of the Blackford bridge.

School board approves changes to board boundary lines

On Monday, Webster County School Board members addressed a proposed measure from Webster County Clerk Valerie Newell that would change board member boundary lines to match with recent changes to the county’s magisterial districts. 

Staff Stuff/ Bad Drivers

People would absolutely hate me if I had become a police officer. The reason? Because I would constantly be on the look out for people violating minor traffic laws. I can’t think of anything that annoys me worse than people who are just plain inconsiderate drivers. I’ve felt this way since before I could drive.
Okay, let me run down my list of minor traffic annoyances. Some of these are illegal, while others are just inconsiderate. In each case their lack of consideration for other vehicles and/or traffic regulations makes them a danger to everyone on the road.

Webster Schools: Changing of the guard

Monday’s school board meeting marked the unofficial end of Pete Galloway’s term as Superintendant of Webster County Schools. Galloway’s contract with the district will end on Monday, June 30, 2014, with Webster County native Dr. Rachel Yarbrough taking over on July 1.

Providence 4th of July events announced

Plans for 2014 Providence ‘4th of July Celebration’ have been announced by the Providence Tourism Commission.
This year’s celebration will get under way at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 4, and will feature live music from 4:00 until 10:00 p.m.

Webster County PVA Office receives 8th award in 11 years

Webster County’s Property Valuation Administrator’s (PVA) Office continued a tradition of excellence earlier this month by having one of it’s employees recognized for their service at the Kentucky PVA’s annual Summer Conference held in Louisville, Ky on June 5, 2014. 

Sebree principal named

Webster County Board of Education announced the name of Sebree Elementary’s new principal on Tuesday. Dawn Forker, a special education teacher for grades 2-5 at Burns Elementary School in Daviess County, will replace principal Terry Starks who resigned his position at the end of the school year in order to return to the classroom.

Highway 120 near Slaughters closed on Monday

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close KY 120 in WEBSTER County on Monday, june 23, 2014.

KY 120 will be closed @ mile point 18.4 to allow the a cross drain to be replaced.
This is along KY 120 near the intersection with KY 1069/Old Dixon-Slaughters Road west of Slaughters.
The roadway is expected to close at about 8:00 a.m., CDT, Monday. It is expected to reopen about 4:30 p.m.
There will be no marked detour.
Approximately 600 vehicles travel this section of KY 120 in an average day.

The search for a missing man ended in tragedy on Sunday when search and rescue personnel located the body of Charles Michael Taylor, 46 of Sebree, at the bottom of a Sebree area pond.

Dixon Commission met last week in their regular scheduled meeting. During the meeting, commission members voted to approve the second reading of an ordinance that would create the position of Public Works Director.

Clay fire department could be finished this week

Clay City Council handled a brief agenda last Tuesday night, quickly approving the second reading of three budgetary ordinances and voting to renew the city employees’ insurance plan for the next fiscal year. But the biggest new of the night was the announcement that contractors were only a week and a half away from finishing construction of the new Clay Fire Department building.

Webster County Relay for life will be hosting its 2014 event on Saturday, June 14, at Trojan Field in Dixon.
As we prepare for the event, The Journal-Enterprise would like to take an opportunity to honor a few Webster County residents who have won their battle with cancer. Their stories are all different, but each one is an inspiration.
Dixon area resident Hugh Smith summed up his experience with lung cancer by saying “I’m an extremely lucky individual.” Many people might agree with that summation.

School board hears update on teacher’s training days

On Monday night Dr. Rachel Yarbrough, who will assume the superintendent of Webster County Schools position on July 1, updated the school board on how the district’s teachers spent their Professional Learning Days last week.
“We planned some really purposeful meetings for Webster County’s certified staff,” she said. “They laid the foundation for teaching moving forward.”

Middle School project nearing completion

With only eight weeks before the start of next school year, Webster County School officials and the Princeton Lumber Company are scrambling to make sure that Webster County Middle School will be ready in time for the August start of classes.

Not the first time jail escapee has been on the run

Two weeks have passed since Marcle Jenkins, 29 of Kenova, WV, escaped from a Webster County Detention Center employee while at Baptist Health in Madisonville for medical treatment.
Jail officials say that at the time of his escape they had not received a copy of his criminal record and did not know that the inmate had a history of running from police. Jailer Terry Elder said last week that the detention center has taken steps to prevent that lack of information in the future.

New principal named for WC Middle School

Last week Webster County Interim Superintendent Pete Galloway introduced the board to the person who will lead the new Webster County Middle School (WCMS) once it opens for classes in August.
Cyndi Boggs, a longtime educator will come to the district from nearby Hopkins County School District, where she is currently serving as a fourth grade teacher at Pride Avenue Elementary. She has also worked as a part time Adjunct Instructor at Murray State University’s Madisonville campus since 2000.

Providence Police arrest escaped convict

      At around 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, Providence Police Chief Brent McDowell stopped a pickup registered to Jay's Electric Service at the corner of Morgan and Cedar Streets. Behind the wheel was William Clark, 23, who had escaped from a Graves County Jail work crew earlier in the day.

The city of Providence will play host to a new event on September 13, 2014, welcoming dozens of authors from around the region to the first ever Providence Literary Festival. The centerpiece of the event will be a horror author with four New York Times Best Sellers and ties to the popular television series “Walking Dead”.

KSP looking for help locating owner of malnourished horse

At around noon on Sunday, May 25, 2014, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) recieved a call about an extremely malnourished horse running free near Fletcher Melton Road outside of Providence.

Sebree water customers can expect six months of issues

Sebree officials warned on Monday night that the city’s water customers could experience a large volume of boil water advisories and interrupted services during the next six months. That’s because of a water project the city started Monday morning.

As the search for an inmate who escaped from Webster County Detention Center authorities continues, Jailer Terry Elder said that a lack of information was a factor in the convict’s escape from custody.

Webster County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday afternoon that Deputy Derrick Ray received a complaint at 3:54 p.m. on Friday, May 30 from the family of Perla Viridana Martinez, 15 of Sebree.
