Webster County Work Ready hopes to take another step forward on Thursday when the group hosts ‘Hot Topics Luncheon: State of the Commonwealth, County and School’, a meeting that hopes to bring together business, political and educational leaders from around the county.

Guest speakers for the event will include State Senator Dorey Ridley, Judge Executive Jim Townsend and School Superintendent Dr. Rachel Yarbrough. Speakers are expected to discuss the importance of the Work Ready movement, and explain how community members can have an impact on the event.

The event will be Thursday, July 23, at 11:30 a.m. in the Annex on the Dixon Campus of Webster County Schools. Anyone interested in attending should RSVP at 270-639-5042. Seating is limited.

A Kentucky Work Ready Community certification is a measure of a county’s workforce quality. For businesses and industry looking to locate in a region, the ‘Work Ready’ designation is a quick and easy way to identify the skill level of the workforce before ever setting foot in a county.

There are two levels of certification – counties can apply to be a Kentucky Work Ready Community or a Kentucky Work Ready Community in Progress.

Webster County achieved the ‘in Progress’ designation two years ago, and is currently in the process of getting that status renewed. Although it is a process most of the public is unaware of, it is constantly going on. To get renewed, the Work Ready Committee must be able to show improvement in areas such as graduation rate, post secondary education and the number of residents who have earned the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).

Although many people aren’t familiar with the NCRC, it is a portable credential that demonstrates achievement and a certain level of workplace employability skills in Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information, and Reading for Information. Those tests have been around for decades as the ACT WorkKeys.
