Providence Council holds brief five minute meeting

By CHARLIE HUST
Providence City Council zipped through a brief, five-minute regular session Monday night in the council chambers.
The council heard reading of a “re-do” of the newly-approved bucket brigade and charitable solicitation ordinance. In the last meeting of the council, there was a bit of confusion in one part of the ordinance according to councilman Keith Farrell. He pointed out that the document stated that solicitation could only be held on Sunday.
So the council decided to “start from scratch” and re-word parts of the ordinance to clarify the interpretation problem.

Mayor Eddie Gooch, along with the entire council, stated that the intent of the ordinance was not to hamper fund-raising efforts by local civic groups, school organizations and charities.
“I was thinking this was just for bucket brigades, but yes, I can see your point because it does say all solicitations must be held on Sunday,” Gooch added. “This was the intent of what we were trying to do with the ordinance.”
Farrell sponsored the re-vamped ordinance in Monday’s meeting and second reading will be held on Nov. 19.
Councilwoman Dolores Overby asked if any paving or road patching work had been scheduled.
Mayor Gooch noted that Public Works Director David May was trying to work out a schedule with Doyle Ware (Providence Paving) in order to begin some blacktopping work before area asphalt plants close for the winter.
“Our plans are to get some patching and paving work done before the weather turns (bad),” Mayor Gooch explained.
Wth no other items on the agenda, and no public appeals, the council adjourned into Executive Session to discuss personnel. Upon returning into regular session, the council reported no action.
