Miner Killed at Dotiki

Nathan ‘Nate’ Phillips, 36, of White Plains was killed in a mining accident at Alliance Resource Partners LLC’s (ARLP) Webster County Coal, Dotiki Mine last Tuesday, January 19, at approximately 4:00 p.m.

According to the initial incident report by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Phillips was operating a continuous miner when he became pinned between the machine and the coal rib.

Phillips had been employed at Dotiki for five and a half years, with almost a year and a half running a continuous miner.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Phillips family,” David Ross, Vice President of Operations for Webster County Coal Webster County Coal, said in a press release. “We asks that you join us in extending support to Nate’s family and his fellow Dotiki miners during this extremely difficult time.”

Phillips is survived by his wife, Duska Daugherty Phillips; son, Jeffery Phillips and daughters, Katie, Tuesday, and Gabriella Phillips.

The coal mining industry suffered 11 fatal injuries in 2015, including one at ARLP’s recently closed Sebree Mine, also in Webster County. Phillip’s death is the third mining fatality in the month of January.
