A team of Respiratory Care students from Madisonville Community College recently earned the title of ‘State Champions’ while participating in the State Sputum Bowl on October 8, 2015, hosted by the Kentucky Society for Respiratory Care (KSRC) in Lexington, Kentucky. The four member quick recall team included two Webster County residents, Sarah Glazebrook of Providence and Amanda Tomkins of Slaughters.

The Sputum Bowl is a knowledge contest that has been a part of every American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) national convention since the 1970’s for medical practitioners. In 2004 the student division was implemented, allowing each state that is part of the AARC to send both a practitioner and student team to the national competition.

The Sputum Bowl is a quick recall competition that tests students’ knowledge on all aspects of respiratory care.  In a situation where a patient is having trouble breathing, ever second counts. This competition is designed to help both resperatory students and professionals have better and faster response times by being able to recall important information as quickly as possible.
