In May Governor Steve Beshear announced a $900,000 grant had been awarded to expand the Tri-County Alliance Recycling Center in Henderson. The near 3,000 square foot facility opened it’s doors over the summer and has since been working to streamline recycling in the tri-county area.
“Instead of our trash going from the compaction center, straight to the landfill, it will go to the recycling center in Henderson,” explained Webster County Judge Executive Jim Townsend. This, he said, was not only environmentally good, it would also save space in the county’s landfill.
When recyclables arrive at the facility it is loaded onto a converyor. Prisoners from the Henderson County jail pick off and sort the recyclables and get them to their proper destination inside the building.

“The number of inmates we have can fluxuate,” said Susan Sauls, director of education and outreach for Tri-County Recycling. “But it costs a whole lot less to have inmates than it does to hire fulltime employees. The workers we get are hardworing and dilegent.”
Webster County started sending loads to the new facility over the summer. Items that come into the county’s solid waste sites or to one of the recycling bens around the Webster County are loaded into reusable cardboard “gaylords” and shipped to Henderson.
Items accepted by Tri-County include: aluminum cans, plastic containers, steel cans, glass bottles, (clear, green, brown), magazines, phone books, newspaper and inserts, junk mail and office paper, paperboard boxes, cereal boxes, tissue boxes, corrugated cardboard, scrap steel, appliances, electronics (except TVs), motor oil, batteries and tires (minimum fee based on tire size).
Items not accepted are: trash, televisions, window glass, mirrors, light bulbs, aluminum foil, pie tins, foil plates, windows or door frames, household hazardous waste or aerosol or auto product cans.
