Tourism Commission seat remains vacant

According to Providence Mayor Eddie Gooch, once the Uptown Fall Festival is over this weekend, things will slow down for the Providence Tourism Commission. That will give the mayor and the city council some time to select a volunteer to fill vacant seats on the commission.

“We will try to get somebody on there before the spring,” Gooch said, explaining that he would rather take the time to find a good candidate than to just rush through the selection process. “We don’t need bodies on the commission. We need people who are willing to work in the community. People who can get the job done.”
The commission is currently made up of six members; Ben Leonard, Carol Hill, Jennifer Gobin, Mary Powell, Stephanie Norman and Katharine Turner.
“Anybody who is willing to volunteer their time and serve can apply,” Gooch said. “They can just stop by the city building and let us know they’re interested. Eventually we’ll take look at the list of volunteers. Then we’ll get the tourism commission’s thoughts as well.”
The Providence Tourism commission was created in the summer of 2011. The volunteer commission is funded by a three percent tourism tax, and tasked with promoting recreation, convention, and tourist activity in Providence.
Some of the events the commission sponsor include the Uptown Fall Festival, the Providence July 4th celebration and a concert at the coal festival by Jared Ashley, former Nashville Star contestant and current Blaster Recording Artist.
